"Mr. Bumble, I shall scream", from Oliver (with Phyllis McLeod) |
Richard has played a variety of roles in musical theatre from chorus in Hello Dolly; to the overbearing Mr. Bumble in Oliver; the crusty headwaiter in She Loves Me; the irate father, King Hildebrand, In Princess Ida; the scheming poetic Minstrel in Once Upon a Mattress; and a host of characters in the Ceilidh shows. He has played character roles all of his performing life and truly enjoys the range and depth that those characters can obtain, attempting to make each one a memorable character for the audience.
This photo is taken from the West End Studio Theatre production of Oliver in 2001. Richard played Mr. Bumble (one of his favourite roles) to Phyllis McLeod's Widow Corney, who "gave stellar performances with their lusty tomfoolery."
Richard is equally at home with popular musical theatre and operetta, and truly enjoys Gilbert and Sullivan. In addition to the stage roles, many of his concerts and recitals contain numbers from current and classic musical theatre and operetta repertoire.
Here's a short movie clip of Richard performing and singing in Oliver!
