La Traviata, Opera Ontario 1999
(with Carlo Schibelli)

Richard has always loved opera music from his earliest memories of Caruso and Marilyn Horne recordings. He attended an opera workshop on a whim (with a little prodding from his voice teacher) and ended up landing the lead role of Alfredo in La Traviata. Since then he has performed in Il Tabarro and La Boheme in solo roles with Centuries Opera and North York Opera (Toronto) and in Aida, La Traviata, and Madama Butterfly in chorus roles with Opera Ontario.

Richard was attracted to opera from a very early age and often listened to the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. Favourite singers over the years have included Enrico Caruso, Marilyn Horne, Beverly Sills, Sheryll Mills, Richard Tucker, and Robert Merrill. More recent favourites are Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Angela Georgiu and of course Cynthia Lawrence with whom he appeared in Madam Butterfly. Richard has already performed one of his favourite roles: Alfredo, from La Traviata and hopes he will have the opportunity to perform Canio from Il Pagliacci, and also principal roles in Werther, Tosca, L'Elizir D'amour, Turandot and Madame Butterfly. As a boy he was attracted to the tenor and soprano arias because of the soaring music, but was also enamored by the earthiness of the baritones, basses and mezzo-sopranos. After his voice changed he began singing baritone but has shifted to tenor and a much more comfortable range.

"Once, I almost got to sing with Luciano Pavarotti. Then he cancelled the concert."
